Welcome to the WiP website!

The Women in Physics (WiP) committee at McGill is a group of students and faculty members who are passionate about issues faced by women and other minority groups in physics.

We aim to

  • Foster an inclusive environment

  • Support the women in our department

  • Spread the message about the importance of diversity in the field

Thursday 3rd October 2019

Thursday 3rd October, WiP was our first EVER McGill Scavenger Hunt!

Participants solved clues and riddles, found McGill secrets and took pictures in front of secret places.

1st Prize and title of 'Master Hunters' went to

'As long as we beat Frank!'

Think now about applying for future WiP Coordinator positions 2020/2021

Are you a McGill physics graduate student and interested in promoting inclusivity and diversity in physics? Here are two paid ways to contribute. Each of these departmental positions outlined below could replace your teaching assistantship for the same pay (TA – 90 hours at $29.33/hour) for the Fall or Winter or both semesters. We encourage anyone with an active interest in increasing inclusion (of any or no gender!) to consider these positions for one or two semesters.

1. WiP Internal Coordinator/Communicator: Are you a people-person interested in communications and event planning? With help from the WiP Committee, this position organizes events such as a social, awareness-raising ice breaker event at beginning of Fall semester and a special colloquium in the spring, and maintains ongoing activities and our online presence. This position is also a primary point of contact and information for WiP and other equity-related activities at McGill and in the Montréal community at large. Beyond facilitating/sharing existing programs, there is also an opportunity to initiate new projects.

2. WiP Outreach Coordinator: We are also looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic individual to lead seminars and panels on equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) and physics + STEM fields at large. We take these sessions to local CEGEPs and to McGill events. The aim for the next academic year will be to continue and expand this scheme to include more schools, some of which have already expressed interest in the workshops. More information can be found in the attached document. There is also space for further development of the seminars.

To apply or for more information, please email women.committee [at]; we aim to identify candidates by July 12th, after which time qualified applicants will be invited for a brief online (or in person) interview with members of the committee.
